Coaches and Coaching

If your experience in skating so far has just been in the Learn to Skate group lessons, you may not have a private coach. Many skaters eventually work with a coach in addition to group lessons. Your skater will make a lot of progress with one-on-one lessons, and will have the coach's undivided attention.

If your skater decides to compete, your coach may choreograph routines and "put your skater on the ice" - that's when the coach watches, coaches, and encourages your skater during the warm-up session at a competition, and is there when your skater does his or her routine.

How do I find a coach?

If your child has been in the group lessons, he or she has probably had several of the coaches already. You can ask one of the Viking Board Members or coaches for suggestions.

Do all coaches choreograph and come to competitions?

No, not all - that's something you'll need to discuss with any coach to make sure that your expectations will be met. You might make arrangements with the coaches or use the Team Coach at competitions - whatever works for you and your skater.

How much do coaches charge?

It varies by the coach. You'll have to ask.

Does the ISI Team need to approve my choice of coaches?

No! Your choice of coach is entirely up to you and your child. The Team is not a coaching organization and does not want or intend to interfere with the child-coach-parent relationship.
